Faulk’s TD with 3:19 left gives Pats 23-16 win

New England Patriots St. Louis Rams

Short-handed but sure-handed, the Patriots got by the St. Louis Rams on a fingertip touchdown catch by Kevin Faulk.

The Patriots’ best pass-catching running back hung onto Matt Cassel’s 15-yard pass on the left edge of the end zone with 3:19 remaining as the Patriots rallied for a 23-16 win Sunday.

Another timely grab – a juggling interception by Deltha O’Neal with 1:08 left – ended the Rams’ last threat.

Faulk had shouldered a bigger running load than usual with Laurence Maroney sidelined for the season and the top two backups in the ground game, Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan, out with injuries. But Faulk did what he does best – catching the ball– just in time as the Patriots (5-2) won their second straight game.

Until then, St. Louis’ Josh Brown and New England’s Stephen Gostkowski each kicked three field goals. BenJarvus Green-Ellis’ 2-yard run on the Patriots first possession had given them a 7-3 lead. Then the Rams went ahead 10-7 on a 69-yard pass play from Marc Bulger to Donnie Avery.

It was the longest pass play of Bulger’s career, 2 yards more than his hookup with Torry Holt on Oct. 15, 2006, against Seattle.

But the Rams (2-5) couldn’t overcome the absence of Steven Jackson, their leading rusher and receiver who missed the game with a strained right thigh muscle. And defensive end Leonard Little left in the first half with a hamstring injury.

They lost for the first time since Jim Haslett replaced Scott Linehan, who was fired with an 0-4 record.

Faulk led the Patriots with 60 yards on 13 carries and added four receptions for 47 yards. Cassel was 21-for-33 for a career-high 267 yards as the replacement for Tom Brady.

Nfl international series

The winning drive began at the Patriots 47 after a punt. Cassel was sacked for an 8-yard loss by rookie Chris Long on the first play. But then he connected with Randy Moss for gains of 23 and 3 yards before a 7-yard run by Faulk gave the Patriots a first down at the Rams 28.

Cassel threw an 8-yard completion to Moss and Faulk ran 5 yards before Cassel lofted the winning throw into Faulk’s hands.

St. Louis also had some big catches. Donnie Avery caught a 69-yard touchdown pass and set up two field goals with long receptions. Holt’s 11-yard catch set up another field goal.

The Rams took a 3-0 lead on Brown’s 20-yard field goal on their first series before Green-Ellis’ touchdown. Gostkowski kicked field goals of 30 and 27 yards in the last 1:49 of the half to give the Patriots a 13-10 lead.

Brown tied the game with a 44-yard field goal then put the Rams ahead with a 25-yard kick early in the fourth quarter. Gostkowski answered with a 41-yard field goal, tying the game at 16 with 8:22 left.

Your Email Password is Your Most Important Password

Here is a newsflash the security of the majority of your online accounts is only as good as the security of your email address. As many of you know, Sarah Palin’s Yahoo account was recently compromised by taking advantage of public information to answer her secret question and take control of her account. You are at the mercy of the strength of the Password Reset Mechanism. Password Reset today is flawed.

Rule #1: Never ever ever enter your email address and username into any webpage on the Internet except that of your email provider. You are placing yourself at significant risk if you do so (there are some exceptions to this rule of course, like if your email provider is also an OpenID provider or supports delegated authentication).

Smugmug

Rule #2: The answer to your Secret Question should be a random string of gibberish. “Who is your best friend”? The answer should be: d8239d#5d. This way no one can guess it.

i learned the hard way fair how vulnerable i was when i lost access to my hotmail account. i cannot begin to delineate what this felt like. it might feel like losing the keys to your house, arriving at home, finding a burglar in your house and getting a busy signal when trade 911.

Jeff Atwood wrote about this exact problem a few months ago:

You should re-read these words a few times and internalize just what they mean. #3 is exactly why you should generate a unique password for every single website you visit. You should manage this complexity using a tool such as RoboForm, PassPack, Verisign PIP, Keepass or LastPass.

I don’t know 95% of my passwords.

Almost every single account you have will have something called a Password Reset feature. You see, none of us can remember all the passwords we use for our different sites. Heaven forbid we actually try and use unique passwords and then forget a password. How do you get access?

Well in the case of many banks and such that store highly sensitive information, you have to get on the horn and talk to a human proving that you are who you are. Usually this is done by sharing something with them that only you know and that they can verify. Things like:

And in some cases, they will physically mail you a new password to your registered address.

But what about the sites that don’t think they have highly sensitive information, or don’t want to incur the cost of such a human labor intensive process? Well they will do one of the following:

The French leader, who holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, later told a press conference that he had in mind a "G8 format," referring to the eight leading economic powers, that could be opened to "emerging countries."

Bush also urged the world body to fully implement sanctions against North Korea

MySpace Music And EMI: Just About There?

MySpace Music has held up its launch, originally scheduled for last week, presumably so that MySpace CEO Chris DeWolfe can bring EMI Music Group on board. So this should be a good sign: We’re told Chris DeWolfe was seen at EMI’s London HQ yesterday.

Obligatory to-be-sure paragraph: To be sure, Chris DeWolfe doesn’t actually have to travel to London to get a deal done with the people at EMI. We’re pretty sure everyone involved has access to email, fax machines, plane tickets, etc. So yesterday’s sighting doesn’t guarantee that EMI has been brought into the fold. But it’s not a bad sign, right?

Gun-Barrel Justice

Art mimicks life. In Reform Era I — late 1800s and early 1900s — many works of art helped trigger the revolt of the ordinary people against the Robber Barons and their Gilded Age. We’ve come full circle to a new Gilded Age, to the need for Reform Era II. Will art play its role? At least one crew of film-makers thinks so.

New ideas, new media

Haven’t heard from the other panelists concerning a proposal I made at Tuesday night’s Loyola journalism forum, so I guess the idea’s a thumbs down. That’s a shame. It would have been a fun one.

Loyolaforum_2_3

After sharing a lively discussion with four other area bloggers before a crowd of 200 plus at the request of WTTW host Phil Ponce, in concluding thoughts your IR Editor proposed the five of us panelists — CapitolFax’s Rich Miller, DailyKos’ Georgia Logothetis, RealClearPolitic’s Blake Dvorak, Chicago Tribune’s Eric Zorn and I — should consider collaborating our radically different perspectives online. Such an effort would put Illinois out in front nationally in the new media. (Photo by Michael Burns — from left to right — Ponce, IR Editor, Dvorak, Zorn, Logothetis and Miller)

Tuesday evening’s discussion was sharp and lively as we plundered through the ethics of blogging, the challenges of dealing with unruly commenters and gaining credibility with a community. We took little jabs at each other’s work and patted each other on the back at other times.

Although the five of us are incredibly diverse in our journalism background and experience, radically different in political viewpoint and personality, we all stood together in defense of blogging when the venue was attacked by on audience member, Professor Paul Green, a Chicago political veteran.

Professor Green sat at the center front row throughout the discussion, shaking his head and rolling his eyes in response to many of our comments. Once or twice he mouthed words at me I couldn’t understand. Green clearly doesn’t approve of the blogging movement and our leading edge in the new media. After making an emotional appeal to the audience against what we do and for the way things were, as only Rich Miller could, he quipped with hand outstretched towards Green, “From one who defends the status quo!”

After the forum, Professor Green told me that conservatives of my ilk were the blame for dissolving the Republican Party in Illinois. He said we were endangering the existence of the party. “I’ll bet you would have even opposed Jim Edgar or Jim Thompson!” he scowled.

Well, I know he’ll probably not like the fact that I’m writing about his trash talk, but I’m still enough of a traditionalist to respect my elders, of which Mr. Green is. I’ve thought for two days about the professor’s criticisms of our blogging and of our political views. I’ve come to the conclusion that while his opinion is valuable to consider, he’s simply not in touch with new ideas and a change going on in Illinois. It’s happening all around him, just as the blogging phenomenon is happening around outdated and irrelevant journalism gatekeepers.

Harpers ferry west virginia

Blogging could determine the heights and the depths of the 2008 election cycle. As Georgia pointed out, dinosaur media gatekeepers are now irrelevant, as bloggers grab up information and run with it around those who would want to determine what the public should and should not know.

While Georgia’s Daily Kos has been directly involved in depths of spreading vicious rumors about Sarah Palin, on the other hand I pointed out that blogs pushed the national media to begin vetting Barack Obama. Either the Chicago media is lazy or they purposely tried to protect their favorite son up until those outside of the Chicago media elite were forced to begin covering questions outsiders raised about Obama.

What’s been most fascinating through this process is to discover is the world outside Lincolnland borders thinks a lot like we scorned conservatives think.

We found out that people outside Illinois, like us, didn’t accept Dr. Jeremiah Wright’s unspeakable distaste for America. They, like us, distrust Obama’s terrorist friend Bill Ayers. They, like us, are uneasy with unchallenged liberalism running rampant in the halls of our legislature. They, like us, understand that smooth talking and ear tickling is not the answer to America’s problems.

Illinois Review will begin its fourth year of existence within the next few weeks. Our audience will never know how many times I’ve thrown in the towel on this effort, only to be pulle …

Republican Party Must Fight Drilling Ban Renewal

in less than two weeks (9/30) the congressional prohibit on drilling for energy runs out. congress force contain to pass a bill to take up the forbid this is a golden opportunity for the republican party if they possess the guts to do exploit the opening and guarantee lower lubricate prices to the american people.if the republican party must refuse to go along with any select of drilling ban, especially the phony bill that pelosi rammed through congress. the president must veto any legislation that includes a drilling embargo. one of two things could happen. the dems could give in which is good for america or the dems could persist their stubborn ways, the drilling issue want thrive to a principal and self-governing party popularity will plummet. either character it is good for america.brighten of energy freedom? by rep. jeb hensarling and sen. jim demint (more by this author) posted 09/18/2008 etin just two weeks, on oct. 1, americans could be celebrating american energy arrogance day. that’s the light of day the bans on oil shale and offshore drilling conducive to oil and natural gas in america will breathe out.right unpropitious american shores there are reserves estimated to relevant once more 20 billion barrels of oil and 97 trillion cubic feet of common gas. and in the west, oil shale is estimated to be between 800 billion and 2 trillion barrels of oil — that is more than three times the proven grease reserves in saudi arabia deserted.so-called “compromise” legislation being considered in congress would escalating energy taxes and merely open up a fraction of these vast reserves, while continuously banning practically 80% of our energy resources offshore. it would be irrational in a national energy calamity to create any untrodden ban on american intensity, and that’s why the unexcelled solution is for congress to allow the inclination bans to conclude on oct. 1.harry reid, nancy pelosi, and the democrats love to preach that drilling will not solve all of america’s energy problems. no kidding — we all know that. even so while drilling alone obviously won’t disentangle every problem, tapping these important sources of american energy is desperately needed to lower gas prices and reduce our nation’s dependence on foreign lubricant.for more than 20 years, democrats possess blocked access to this american energy by including a ban on offshore drilling and oil shale into the yearly appropriations bills passed by congress (or by including them in ‘continuing resolutions’ that keep the government functioning until appropriations bills are passed). leave it to the unbigoted mind to find a temperament to revert ignore to the failed policies of jimmy carter during an energy crisis. we realize that this 1970′s anti-intensity mentality is tired, wrongheaded and artlessly out of gas — no pun intended.but here’s the good news — if congress simply does nothing, then on oct. 1 americans intention be free to pursue vast amounts of our own energy. that’s proper — once the current bans expire, we can for ever be on our way to developing energy in america for americans. we symbolize it’s time for congress to prevail upon out-dated of the distance.increasing our nation’s own lubricate and gas supply is disparaging to our get-up-and-go custody, but we must also give americans the power to pursue other sources of american ?lan. for months, we’ve made clear that we need conservation, but not lately conservation. we have need of renewable energy, but not impartial renewable. we need alternatives, but not only just alternatives. we stress to produce more energy of all types in america so we can drive down the cost of gas and further our energy self-assurance.as we devote these alternative and renewable energies, the no greater than spirit to aide ease the pain at the pump today is to begin to defray the ever-increasing customer acceptance wanted notwithstanding energy. it is commonsense policy to drill here and to pierce now so we can keep our nation strong and secure.it seems likely that democrats, beholden to the left-winger left, will try to stop american energy freedom daytime by sneaking a new drilling ban in a spending paper money that congress must pass to keep the government functioning before the around ban expires on the form day of september.how reckless will nancy pelosi and harry reid be? we’ve seen press reports in which they are so adamant about enacting a new bans on oil shale and offshore drilling that they beget started to talk about a supervision shutdown. to some extent than help lower the tariff of gas and home base

Cocoon concept could take gaming to the next level

So this is nowhere near being actually produced at the moment, but this Cocoon concept could very well point to the future of the gaming industry if applied. If you don’t feel like you get involved enough with your video games, this could change that.

Testicular torsion

picture-12-479x294

The concept involves making gaming immersive. This would allow you to get “inside” the games you play by surrounding you with graphics and game elements. You would sit inside of the Cocoon and be surrounded by speakers and screens. You would feel as if you were in the game.

And the beauty of it is this tech could be applied to any sort of game, whether its a first-person shooter or a driving game. Use this sort of concept with whatever the future of graphics has to offer, and we’re all in for a real treat.
